The UK government has announced proposed reforms to Settlement (Indefinite Leave to Remain) applications under the new “Earned Settlement” model, focusing on contribution, integration, character, and residence.
Key points:
- Standard qualifying period: Most migrants – 10 years (up from 5)
- 3-year faster routes: High earners, entrepreneurs/founders, Global Talent visa holders
- Longer routes: Low-paid workers – 15 years; benefit recipients – 20 years; illegal entrants/overstayers – up to 30 years
- 5-year routes: Skilled frontline public service workers and immediate family of UK citizens/HK BN(O) holders
The rules will apply to migrants who have arrived in the UK since 2021. Consultation is open until 12 February 2026. Employers should review the potential impact on sponsored employees.
Please note: These proposals are subject to consultation and will require formal amendments to the UK Immigration Rules before taking effect. We will continue to monitor developments and provide updates as the new model progresses.
