Thailand is introducing a new Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) with an anticipated start date of December 1, 2024.  This system aims to enhance border security and improve entry procedures.

The ETA applies to all foreign nationals travelling on Free Visa (15 days, 30 days), Visa on Arrival (VOA), and Exemption (60 days) who enter Thailand by air, land, or sea.

Diplomatic passport holders, high-level officials and holders of all types of Long-Term Visas (Non-Immigrant visas), a Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), or a Tourist (TR) Visa (issued by the Thai embassy prior to entry into Thailand) are exempted from the ETA requirements. 

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has not released all details; however, the ETA is expected to operate as follows:

• All travelers entering Thailand on Free Visa (15 days, 30 days), Visa on Arrival (VOA), and Exemption (60 day) must apply for an ETA before arrival.
• Applications are expected to be submitted through Thailand’s E-Visa portal with approvals typically received within 24 hours. However, the official channel for ETA applications has not yet been announced.
• ETA registration will be free of charge for each entry.
• ETA holders can use automated gates at immigration checkpoints by scanning a QR code provided by the system.
• Travelers who fail to complete ETA registration may be stopped by airline staff before boarding or at the border upon arrival, where they should be given the opportunity to complete the ETA application at that time.

Thailand’s Entry Requirements

While the MFA has not published a complete list of requirements, travelers are expected to provide:

• A valid passport
• Copy work permit (if any)
• Proof of travel plans, including tickets into and out of Thailand
• Accommodation details, such as hotel reservations or residential address
• Proof of sufficient funds to support their stay (e.g., 10,000 THB for solo travelers, 20,000 THB per family)

Currently, it is unclear if health insurance or medical records will be required. However, future health concerns may lead to such requirements.

ETA Restrictions

Details regarding other restrictions, such as the number of entries or the duration of stay under the ETA, have not yet been fully disclosed.
