The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), which had been expected to launch later this year, is now likely to be delayed until 2027. A revised implementation timeline is expected following a September meeting of EU-LISA, the EU agency responsible for managing the system.

As a recap, the ETIAS will introduce a new pre-travel authorization requirement for visa-exempt travelers visiting 30 European countries. Its implementation is intended to follow the rollout of the related Entry/Exit System (EES), which became operational across the Schengen Area in April 2026.

Please note that the delay to ETIAS is not expected to affect the biometric enrollment requirements associated with EES. We therefore continue to recommend that travelers allow additional time when planning connections and arrivals in Schengen countries.

Remember that the automated EES records travelers’ entries and exits data electronically, enabling border authorities to more effectively monitor compliance with Schengen stay limits (i.e. the 90-day limit within any 180-day period).

Travelers who exceed the permitted stay limits may face consequences such as fines, removal proceedings, or temporary bans on future entry, depending on the circumstances and the member state involved.  As such, we strongly encourage all travelers to monitor their time spent within the Schengen Area.
