Canada: Notable Changes to International Student Program Regulations

Effective November 15, 2024, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has confirmed notable changes to the International Student Program regulations. These changes include the following:

      • Eligible students will now be allowed to work off campus up to 24 hours a week while classes are in session.
      • To be eligible to work off campus without a work permit, international students must be studying full-time in a post-secondary academic, vocational or professional training program that lasts at least six months and leads to a degree, diploma or certificate.
      • International students who are eligible to work off campus will still be allowed to work full-time during summer breaks between school years and winter breaks between semesters.
      • International students must apply and be approved for a new study permit before changing learning institutions.
