New I-9 Handbook for Employers Available from USCIS

USCIS announced today that a revised Handbook for Employers – Instructions for Completing Form I-9 (M-274) has been posted to the USCIS website which reflects the requirements of the revised Form I-9 (Employment Eligibility Verification Form) that becomes effective April 3. The revised edition of the handbook can be found at:

According to USCIS, the revised handbook improves on the design of the previous edition and includes simpler language and an index for easier navigation. Also included are new charts that:

  • define acceptable employment authorization receipts
  • identify temporary employment authorization documents and
  • provide instructions for the re-verification of these documents

Additional changes to the handbook are:

  • An expanded Question and Answer section including information about J-1 and F-1 students, professional employment organizations, military installations, noncitizen nationals of the United States, documentation for residents of the Federated States of Micronesia and the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and nonimmigrant classifications
  • An expanded reference section that includes many examples of documents acceptable for completion of the Form I-9 along with descriptions that will aid employers in recognizing typical employment authorization and identity documents. It includes both current and older acceptable versions of popular documents, as well as the machine-readable immigrant visa with a temporary I-551 notation and the new U.S. Passport Card
