USCIS Reports Progress In Elimination of FBI Name Check Backlog

March 04, 2009

USCIS announced today that the backlog for name checks that have been pending at the FBI for more than six months has been eliminated.  In addition, USCIS announced that it is working with the FBI to reduce the name check backlog to 90 days by May 30, 2009, and by the end of June, 2009, USCIS and FBI expect to have 98 percent of name checks done within 30 days, with the remaining name checks done within 90 days.  The name check is one of many mandatory security procedures that implemented after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, and are done for all persons who are applying for U.S. permanent resident status (green card) or naturalization.
